Birdsville is located in the heart of Australia, on the edge of the famous Simpson desert. It is not a leisurely 2-3 hours drive from the capital city, but that's the beauty… It is in the middle of bloody nowhere!
We know that you may find getting to Birdsville a little bit daunting if you have never been before, but there are a number of travel options available to those coming to Big Red Bash.
It’s a long way to go, but the road trip (if this is how you choose to travel) is all part of the adventure!
Let’s just run through your main transport options below.
Drive your own
Birdsville is around 1,900 km from Sydney (allow 2.5 days drive) , 1,600 km from Brisbane (allow 2 days drive) and 1,200 km from Adelaide (allow 1.5 days drive). It is accessible by 2WD, however if you want to venture into the desert itself at some stage you will require a 4WD vehicle. Most people coming to Birdsville usually do so in a 4wd.
So, you can make a bee line to Birdsville or alternatively you can take your time and do some outback touring and sightseeing on the way!
If you don't have your own 4WD, you might consider hiring one. This is a fun way to explore the desert and take you further than a regular 2WD.
